Does the black wireless controller of xbox 360 elite work on xbox 360 premium?

I bought the Xbox 360 Premium a week ago or two and got a black wireless controller (apparently considered responsible for the elite edition) free with it. But when I tried to use my premium console it does not work.
These controllers operate on the black premium Xbox?
