what's the best marine chartplotter gps in terms of accuracy, ease of use, upgrade options and best price?
I agree, I use many types of electronic devices capable of shipping boats and my favorite is the series Raymaine. They are C, E, and now the G series of up to 12 inches. They are very friendly and accurate. A screen can display up to 4 different things at the same time, as a plotter, a depth sounder, radar and other things that you can connect up to and including a forward infrared for night use. Very friendly and intuitive. Northstar unit is also great but I find its not as easy to use and the screen is not as good as the x-ray (my opinion).
Can a car gps be modified for marine chart use?
Buying a boat, but do not want to spend much money on a tracer for occasional use unless I can use for car navigation as well. Any advice?
It depends on the GPS model you have in your car. Some models can have more cards (or table in your case) downloaded to them, but not all. Garmin makes a unit PDA can be used and updated with both graphs and maps. I got one off eBay and love it. The cost of adding GPS maps for the summer .. not cheap, about 300USD. You may be able to get a used / refurbished one for this price.
The biggest concern would be the marine environment of salt water. It might not be the best for a unit that is not designed for that.
The U.S. Coast Guard, however, requires that all ships irrespective of size also have a paper chart on board and that the GPS does not rely solely one for your browser.
