This might be a stupid question.
But if you buy a GPS for your car.
Once you purchase the device for the signal directions is free for the life of the unit. Things that you pay per month for say if you want updates of traffic.
What is the difference between CAR and trecking GPS?

I really want to understand the difference between the car and walking GPS. Are they similar?
I am talking from the point of synchronization with the satellites. I saw some trekking GPS synchronizing with 12 (12 channels). Does that mean they are more sensitive than the GPS?
Is it possible to use a GPS for car walking :-)
Or are there any GPS that can be used for both applications simultaneously, and may also be for sailing, say :-)
If they are identical hardware-wise, does not mean that you can use map files for the cars on a GPS walk on foot, or vice versa?

I think the main difference is the power source and the software is loaded. Car Systems will be configured to use 12VDC, and typically be mounted in the hard drive. Trekking (cell) models are battery operated, so voltage is anywhere from 3-9VDC. Since a person has to carry the portable GPS is generally smaller and lighter.
Regarding software, the units of cars will be more likely to have better information on roads, addresses, attractions, etc. while touring model will feature the characteristics of land, etc.
All GPS units I have seen use as many satellites as possible.It needs at least 3 to identify where you are, the satellites it "sees" the more accurate it is.
You can get a car GPS for hiking, but you will need to bring a supply of 12 VDC power supply ... and car batteries are quite heavy;)
Better enforcement would get a portable model and use it in your car, but I do not think models walking gives you usually turn instructions.
