How can one make a mechanical calculator?

I recently traced the complete plans for a ringtone, auto-rewind clock, all legos. Now I want a new challenge. Does anybody out there know where I may find patterns in early mechanical calculators big? So before the entry into Curtas popularity. I want to make add, subtract, multiply, divide, and perhaps find the root of a number scuare.

Suggestions for a graphing calculator for mechanical engineering student?

I'm going to be a mechanical engineering student in the fall and I look just suggestions for a new graphing calculator would be very useful. Budget is not a problem, I'm looking for the best i could get or something like that.

TI-89 is very popular and powerful.
